You talk to me, you smile with me, we have wonderful periods of time together. We laugh, we cry, we forge a bond between us that spills into your dreams and warms you when you're feeling the chill of self-doubt. I hold you when you're afraid, I loan you money when you're broke, and I keep you company on those cold, snowed-in days, bringing hot chocolate with me.
But I'm not on your friends list. I'm not the subject of your conversation. I'm your dirty little secret. Perhaps you want me to be -just yours-, not to be shared with anybody else, and perhaps you're partially ashamed to be so attached to somebody so unlike any of your normal friends.
Everybody knows somebody like me. Everybody has that friend or relative they're reminded of when meeting me, but somehow, it's just not the same. And once you really get to know me, you come to realize that even though it might looks like the same playing field, my rules aren't recognizable in any league.
But somehow, I will quickly grow on you. We will dance. We will sing. We will share, we will spin, we will go to the moon and back, and then, inexplicably, it will be over. Like media sharks after a feast, all the memories we've shared will fade. Let us have a good run, knowing that we're using each other. Let us lie, let us smile, and let us pretend that we'll know each other a year from now. Let us not take each other for granted, let us not worry about the future, let us not squabble about the past. We're here. We're now. Let us never change that.
